EU Leaders Agree On Historic Defense Spending Increase

European Union heads agreed to adopt a historically unprecedented upswing in military spending in urgent summits in Brussels with a view of boosting European defense capacities in the face of potential Russian acts of aggression in the aftermath of the Ukraine invasion.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a way not presented so far, proposed to mobilize up to €800 billion of this, of which €150 billion in loans for joint procurement of European defense equipment.

President of the Republic of France, Emmanuel Macron, in a particular way, highlighted the fact that Russia represents an existential threat and, thus, extended French nuclear legitimacy to other European countries through a deal intended to be signed by 2025.

The former US President Donald Trump, in the face of stalling military aid and intelligence cooperation to Ukraine, hence, his EU counterparts had to enhance their defense alone.

The two states, Spain and Norway, promised to increase their defense funding, while Ukrainian President Zelensky communicated with the EU leaders to work out a plan of action.

The EU’s bid to make a coherent obligation to one another and a stronger political and military capacity against external threats has advanced, thus reaching the defense policy shift.
