In Netflix’s latest release the creators of Black Mirror manifest one of the best mockumentaries of the year.

Death to 2020 stars a who’s who of famous people starring as fictional people reacting to the very real events that took place in the year 2020. With the story of the film being quite evident by the title, it is a satirical tale of the year that it is named after. It includes a star-studded cast and real-life footage to comically wind up this bizarre year,

The introduction of the movie goes “The story of the year that couldn’t be told until now because it wasn’t finished yet.” This line says a lot about how unexpected events kept on happening throughout the year when one could least expect it. Though the movie acknowledges crazy events happen throughout the world the central focus was on the United States and sometimes the United Kingdom

It takes us through the developments of January when Qasem Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike all the way to the 2020 US Elections and Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the results. It takes us to the birth and spread of the Coronavirus pandemic and the global government’s incompetency in handling it. All the while this happens the world still has to acknowledge the history of institutionalized racism and the problems other people face in their day to day life after the death of George Floyd.

Death to 2020 Cast

Death to 2020 has an ensemble cast starring Sameul L Jackson as  Dash Bracket, a reporter for the New Yorkerly Times, Dash acts as a voice of reason in the film. Hugh Grant went through aphysical transformation to play Tennyson Foss, a historian who often shows his racisst side when asked uncomfortable questions specially with regard to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Friends star Lisa Kudrow plays Jeanetta Grace Susan, a non-official conservative spokesperson who seems to be an amalgamation of various Trump spokesperson from Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway, and Kaleigh McEnany. She keeps disputing statements she made while ignoring video evidence that condemns her narrative.

Christin Milioti plays a “self-described soccer mom” or more appropriately a “Karen” who is often seen touting conspiracy theories and racism towards black people due to her being constantly shut off in her internet bubble during the lockdown.

The film also stars Leslie Jones as Dr. Maggie Gravel, a behavioral psychologist, Kumail Nanjiani as  Bark Multiverse, a tech billionaire( loosely based on Mark Zuckerberg, Diane Morgan as the “top five most average person” and Joe Keery as a mixologist turned millionaire YouTuber.
