Munawar Faruqui, a stand-up comedian who was arrested for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments during one of his solo acts has been released on bail.
Munawar Faruqui Released
The stand-up comedian was arrested on January 1, 2021, based on allegations that Munawar Faruqui hurt Hindu sentiments during his stand up act on that very same day.
Faruqui made his stand up performance in the city of Indore and just after his show, an FIR was filed against him. The cops arrested him on the very first day even without verifying the facts in the first place.
Several pleas were made in different courts but every time he was rejected bail. Now after a month of pleas his bail was finally accepted. Many activists and other comedians stood by Faruqui and protested against his unlawful arrest. And as a result of all these protests, Faruqui was finally released.
Did Faruqui Really Hurt Hindu Sentiments?
Well, as a stand-up comedian his only job was to entertain people and make them laugh. By any means, he did not want to hurt the sentiments of any. This was what Faruqui said in his statement after the arrest.
The complaint was made by Eklavya Gaud, son of a BJP politician. As per the footages of the live show, it was seen that Eklavya was offended by one of the comedian’s jokes.
And he even pointed it out during the live show. But it was also seen that Munawar cracked jokes on both Hinduism and Islam in a very playful manner and he did not say anything that sounds hurtful. Despite that, Munawar Faruqui was arrested without proper verification of the fact. His arrest was criticised by many all over the country.
Because it is not something that should happen in the world’s largest democracy like India. It was the complete insult of freedom of speech and expression.
