The IAF is all set to transport vaccines throughout India

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is ready to use its wide fleet of aircraft to distribute the Covid 19 vaccine, as people familiar with developments said on Sunday, to the farthest reaches of the country.

Although there has been no official request from the government to the armed forces so far to assist in the supply and distribution of a vaccine, on condition of anonymity, the individuals cited above said that there is no question about the capacity of the IAF to transport millions of doses around the world.

“There has been no formal request till now for the IAF to help in the transportation of a Covid-19 vaccine. But we do have a formidable fleet of transport aircraft and we can pitch in at short notice if required,” said one of the sources

It is known that if there is an order from the army, the military has figured out modalities that would have to be placed in place to transport vaccines. This will mostly include shifting vaccines from the cold storage network of 28,000 units and ensuring that the doses enter rural areas without losing their potency.

The transport fleet of the IAF comprises eleven C-17 Globemaster heavy-lift aircraft, each capable of transporting up to 75 tonnes of cargo, 19 tonnes of C-130 Hercules aircraft, and workhorses such as Il-76s and An-32s. If possible, smaller aircraft such as the Dorniers and even helicopters can be used to ferry the vaccinations to distant areas with smaller airfields,

The IAF also has great experience in airlifting emergency supplies and facilities both throughout the nation and in the community during contingencies. IAF aircraft transported drugs and other vital supplies to nearby countries such as the Maldives right before the pandemic. During the demonetisation drive, they have also transported currency notes and during elections electronic voting machines (EVMs) and other devices.
